How Anwar proves he is innocent of the sodomy charge?

The road to Putrajaya by Sept 16 pledged by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is full of obstacles and purely depending on the battle in the Aug 26 Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election. The battle for the seat is not only the battle for political survival but will decide if he succeeds in making a political comeback after 10 years.

Although Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is still pursing his plan to wrest power with the help of BN defectors, despite the looming sodomy trial, however, he’s political career is depending on the victory of Permatang Pauh by-election.

He will be involved in a three-cornered fight with Barisan Nasional's Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah and a political non-entity, Hanafi Hamat from Ang-katan Keadilan Insan Ma-laysia in the Aug 26 Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election.

BN is going all out to ensure Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim does not get elected and go on to become a member of parliament. His most potent challenger is still BN's Arif Shah, however, it is not the BN which is going to decide but the people.

Mohd Saiful's act of swearing on the Quran at the Federal Territory mosque that he had been sodomised by Anwar could be interpreted as to prevent him from ousting the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition and also to prevent him from winning the Permatang Pauh by-election, eventually to destroy Anwar's political career.

This is by far the most effective political killing strategy by BN to put Anwar Ibrahim in critical political mass that is enabling them to attract supporters.

A Whisper campaigns tactic that aim to confuse fence-sitters have started telling "even if Anwar wins, he will be convicted with sodomy and jailed forever".

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has dared Pakatan Rakyat leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to swear on the Quran to prove he is innocent of the sodomy charge he faces. He said Anwar should do so just like his accuser Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan who had sworn upon the Quran that Anwar had sodomised him.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang regarded Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan's act of swearing on the Quran as an act of kebodohan (stupidity) which went against the teachings of Islam. "We don't have this practice in Islam. It is the Christians who swear on the bible," said Abdul Hadi during.

Pas spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan's method of swearing on the Quran was against the teachings of Islam, however, Nik Aziz noted that the sumpah laknat (swearing in the face of divine retribution) done by Mohd Saiful during the oath-taking was allowed by Islam. It now depended on the sincerity of his oath that he had been sodomised by Parti Keadilan Rakyat advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, he added.

DAP chairman Karpal Singh said Mohd Saiful's action of swearing on the Quran that he had been sodomised by Anwar could be interpreted as being contempt of court. This was because the sodomy case was pending in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court.

Umno information Chief Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib said there was no reason for Anwar not to swear upon the Quran if he had not sodomised Mohd Saiful.

PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, meanwhile, said that Mohd Saiful's act was to destroy Anwar's political career, and prevent him from winning the Permatang Pauh by-election.

No matter how many times he swears, if the doctor checks and says there is nothing wrong, his oath cannot be used. Do not play around with the name of Allah. Do not degrade our religion."

Following the swearing on the Quran by Mohd Saiful Bukhari, Bar Council deputy president Ragunath Kesavan said the charge against Parti Keadilan Rakyat adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim under Section 377B, which refers to voluntary carnal intercourse against the order of nature, can be amended by the court based on the appropriateness and requirement to ensure that the prosecution was carried out according to the provisions available.

Although Anwar Ibrahim is innocent until proven guilty but for political survival, he has to encounter the political challenge created. However, the action swearing on the Quran would be considered to be just a good political gesture because Anwar Ibrahim himself had to provide legitimate evidence to prove that he was not guilty in the matter or otherwise.
